Ideas for Celebrating Mother’s Day at Home

Good Housekeeping

With all the safety restrictions and social distancing protocols currently enforced, thinking of ways to show our love and appreciation to our moms can be a little bit more challenging this time around. But not every surprise needs a trip to an expensive restaurant, an expensive gift, or a grand gesture, especially when it comes to our mothers. Sometimes, all it takes is a little effort and lots of love to let her know how special she is to us. Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate this coming Mother’s Day at home and still turn it into one of her most special memories.

1. Organize a virtual family reunion

Having everyone in the family come over on Mother’s Day may not be possible for many households especially during this pandemic. If that’s the case, you can arrange a virtual family gathering so that everyone can still greet her at the same time. To make it more meaningful, ask everyone to prepare sweet Mother’s Day messages that they can read to her during your call. Even better, have those who aren’t physically present stay online while you do other celebration ideas that we’ve listed below so they, too, can be part of the fun.

2. Enjoy a family feast

Cook up a feast featuring your mom’s favorite dishes to celebrate her special day. You can prepare the meals yourself so she can skip kitchen duties for the day, or you can cook it with her for some quality family bonding time. Due to the recent restrictions, a lot more restaurants now have takeout options and delivery services. Check if you can order her go-to meals from her favorite restaurants so you can add them to the menu as well. Make it more special by having a nice Mother’s Day-themed table arrangement and decor.

3. Surprise her with breakfast in bed

Start her special day with a sweet surprise by serving her breakfast in bed. The effort of waking up earlier than her, which probably rarely happens, and being the one to prepare breakfast will surely mean a lot to her. You can also write her a special note and leave it on the tray so she can read while enjoying the breakfast you prepared for her. She’ll surely leave her room with a big smile on her face that’d be satisfying to see.

4. Give her a day off from all the housework

Most moms are in charge of almost all the household chores and while it may not always be obvious, doing these chores can be very tiring and time-consuming. Let your mom have her much-needed rest by offering to do all her chores for the day. If you can go the extra mile, you can volunteer to do all her chores for the week or even the whole month.

5. Pamper her by having a spa day at home

Your mom may be missing her visits to the spa so treat her with a relaxing massage or nail spa session during her special day. You can book for home services if it’s available in your area. If not, there are online tutorials on massages and nail arts that are quick and easy to learn, so you can try doing it yourself, too. This pampering session makes for good bonding time as well, especially between mothers and daughters.

6. Have a movie marathon

Make a list of your mom’s favorite films and some movies she’s been wanting to see but couldn’t because of the pandemic. You can also add some movies about families and motherhood to the list for more options. Gather all these movies by checking their availability on streaming sites and by buying or renting a digital copy. Then, you can all watch it together on Mother’s Day.

7. Get her flowers

You’ve probably given your mom flowers countless times but just because it’s quarantine doesn’t mean you have to skip it this Mother’s Day. There’s actually a lot of online shops that can deliver flowers to your mom. They even have options to include small gifts like a box of chocolates, a bottle of perfume, or a stuffed toy. If you can, why not arrange the bouquet yourself? This way, you can choose to include her favorite flowers or those with a symbolic association with motherhood such as daylilies.

8. Just spend the day with her

Preparing sweet surprises for your mom on her special day will surely make her feel special. Whatever it is, big or small, she’s going to love and appreciate it. What’s important is that you give her your time and attention on Mother’s Day. Do things with her that you know she’s been wanting to do with you for a long time. Even just giving her your time of day to chat with her, tell her how you’re doing, reminiscing precious moments, and sharing what’s new with you can be more than enough.
